James studied in Birmingham and Cambridge before training in cancer medicine and radiotherapy at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. He is a national leader in advanced radiotherapy techniques for liver and pancreatic cancer in both the NHS and private sector, having pioneered the treatment of primary liver cancer with a highly targeted form of treatment called stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR). James also lead the introduction of MRI-guided radiotherapy for these tumours – a technique that maximises tumour control whilst minimising side effects. He has a particular interest in how chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy can be sequenced to achieve the best possible outcomes for inoperable tumours, is principle investigator on a number of related clinical trials, and is clinical director at GenesisCare, the leading private provider of radiotherapy in the UK.
